Welcome to the first edition of the Inquirer, coming to you from Public Leadership Inquiry (Steve Turner, Robin Ryde, Sue Duncan and Julian Powe).

In this edition, there are three short bulletins, each of which takes only a few minutes to read:

The value of error. Recent research argues that we are wrong about being wrong, and that error is both a given and a gift for organisations striving to become more agile...more

Innovation and agility that you don’t expect. 75% of successful innovation efforts come from unplanned activities. Leaders interested in fostering innovation will want to pay particular attention to encouraging informal, unplanned ‘organic’ interactions...more

Leadership tools and mindset of crisis management. Public service models for agile organisations have been strongly shaped by experiences of responding to major crises...more

In these lean, challenging times, moments for reflection are at a premium. Our intent with the Inquirer is regularly to offer short, nourishing bulletins highlighting insights, ideas and new research in support of agile leadership and the development of lean, agile organisations. And we are very conscious how breathless and demanding the leadership task is at present.

We do hope you enjoy these bulletins. Please feel free to share them with colleagues and to join the continuing conversation amongst leaders at Public Leadership Inquiry on www.publicleadershipinquiry.co.uk. And, if you have another spare moment, do please let us have your views on this first edition and particularly how we could improve the Inquirer in the coming weeks and months.

<!--StartFragment-->

Edna Murdoch and Miriam Orriss were delighted to be asked to conduct a coaching supervision workshop at OCM’s CPD event in July.

Overview

‘The success of an intervention depends on the inner condition of the intervener.’ Peter Senge.

The term ‘Internal Supervisor’ was coined by Patrick Casement to describe perspectives and insights that are available to practitioners as they work with clients. In essence, it is tuning into the entire range of body/mind information offering cognitive, intuitive, somatic information.

Paying attention to the Internal Supervisor provides important data, so coaches can then choose interventions that are genuinely laser-like and perfectly timed. This range of information about the coaching situation becomes available to the coach’s analytical/processing mind, which in turn decides interventions and strategies. With a well-developed Internal Supervisor, comes a major increase in Coaching Presence and powerful, impactful coaching.

On the day

It was great to be joined by 20 experienced coaches who were all interested in the concept of the internal supervisor. We briefly introduced CSA’s Full Spectrum Model, which we use throughout our coaching supervision diploma. It brings together 20th and 21st century knowledge from classic models of supervision as well as attending to the mind, body and spirit.

"Coach as Supervisor"

As someone involved with coaching in your organisation, you will be aware of the need for regular, high quality supervision as organisations seek to

Protect their investment in training internal coaches

Enhance and professionalise the quality of coaching that is delivered

Ensure there are robust processes for coach support, development and engagement

As an organisation, The OCM have been at the forefront of developing and delivering supervision training for individuals, delivering our first accredited programme back in 2004. Whilst there are excellent supervision qualifications available for the independent coach, we believe that there is a gap in market for a training programme that is uniquely designed to support the needs of internal coaches who are stepping into coach supervision roles within their organisation.

To address this need, we are now pleased to introduce our new “Coach as Supervisor” programme that is specifically designed to develop supervisory skills to enable experienced coaches to supervise other coaches with confidence and competence. This is an ideal programme for an HR or L&D specialist who has qualified as a coach and now has the responsibility for developing an internal pool of coaches to work across the business and needs to provide them with supervisory support.

To view a detailed overview of the 'Coach as Supervisor' programme please click here

We plan to run an open programme starting on the 18th January 2012 in London so if you would like to speak to one of our experts to find out more about this programme (including content and pricing information) Please call us on 01869 338989 or email lucy@theocm.co.uk

Puddle or Raindrop?

If we compare ourselves and people we interact with as raindrops and puddles which one are you?

If you look at a puddle in the rain you will see that raindrops fall into it, causing many ripples. The puddle has no choice but be bombarded by the raindrops. They cause a disruption of the surface, and ripple out that disruption to the edges. The heavier the rainfall, the more the raindrops, the more disturbance. Some people see their lives as having things happen to them with no choice about it.

Then of course, there are the raindrops themselves. These raindrops fall from the sky and have an impact upon the puddles into which they fall. Causing ripples in the puddles due to their impact. There are people in the world who appear to be incredibly influential in others' lives (Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jr, The Dalai Lama, Hitler, Genghis Khan, etc). Were their impacts always positive? Or always negative? Perhaps they were a bit of both.....?

But let us look at it another way. Ok, the puddle can't choose whether or not to be hit by the raindrops, and neither can it choose how it reacts to the bombarding of the rain. However, it does grow. The more rain that hits a puddle, the larger it gets. As humans we can choose how we respond. We can go through life complaining that things keep happening to us, or we can choose to learn and grow from each experience.

The important thing to notice about raindrops and puddles is - they're made up of the same thing..... water. They're separate if they're viewed in one way (puddles and raindrops) and they're the same if viewed in another (water).

As you go through this week, have a ponder about your life and how you respond to things that happen to you. Will you choose to get cross or upset, or will you choose to learn and grow? Be aware of how your "raindrops" affect other people's "puddles". In other words, things that you do will cause ripples in others people's lives - would you like those ripples to be positive or negative? And finally..... remember that, like raindrops and puddles, we are all connected and what we do to someone else, ultimately affects us too. You don't have to be famous or powerful to affect someone's life.
